As large scale, tabula rasa style developments in the capital began to attract open criticism, the perceived problem in Dashilar grew in complexity, with fewer solutions viable through traditional urban planning and implementation strategies. However, the stagnation of development caused by these difficulties has also presented Dashilar with a rare opportunity in Beijing: The opportunity to breathe, to reflect and to become something different. It has been given a second chance to find a new approach. The traditional way of life and pace, along with the exquisite jumble of smaller, family run business does not need to conflict with investment. The aim of Dashilar Project is to re-envision the area’s past to promote a heterogeneous yet interdependent mix of business and people both new and old, restoring Dashilar’s deserved prosperity, traditional vibrancy, and place within Beijing.
